The various parts of the body fell at several spots all through the Indian subcontinent and formed sites which are known as Shakti Peethas today.Īt all Shakti Peethas, the Goddess Shakti is accompanied by Lord Bhairava (a manifestation of Lord Shiva). The other gods intervened to stop this dance, and the Vishnu's disk, or Sudarshana Chakra, cut through the corpse of Sati. Still crazed with grief, he picked up the remains of Sati's body, and danced the dance of destruction through the Universe. Sati was unable to bear her father's insults toward her husband, so Dākshāyani invoked her yogic powers and immolated herself.Įnraged at the insult and the injury, Shiva destroyed Daksha's sacrifice, cut off Daksha's head, and replaced it with that of a goat as he restored him to life. Shiva eventually allowed her to go escorted by his ganas (followers).īut Sati, being an uninvited guest, was not given any respect. She had expressed her desire to attend to Shiva who had tried his best to dissuade her from going. The fact that she was not invited did not deter Sati from attending the yagna. Daksha invited all the deities to the yagna except for Shiva and Sati. Daksha was angry because his daughter Sati had married the 'yogi' God Shiva against his wish. Nandi is no ordinary because he has attained proximety of Lord Shiva which is the goal of every being.According to legend, at some time in the Satya Yuga, Daksha performed a yagna (named Vrihaspati) with a desire of taking revenge on Lord Shiva. That is why he is called Nandi or pleasure or the enlighted one. Nandu also represents Jeeva or physical existence which is in pursuit of unifying with the Shiva or the eternal soul or the ultimate delight. Both have to merge into one ultimately, Hence it is advised not to stand in between Nandi and Shiva for prayer. Nandi represents Jeeva and lingam in form of Lord Shiva. Where, on the one hand, Sfatic Shivling is the sole manifestation of Shiv-Shakti, on the other hand, it is the glimpse of the endlessness of knowledge. It is the journey of the making of Shiva from Shiv and propagating this through the mode of the Saptrishis.
